Earn Degree Credit

There are actions you can take to ensure that your study abroad participation will not add time to degree completion.

  • Understand the Requirements of Your Degree
Be sure that you also have a solid understanding of the requirements of your degree -- including any required course sequencing (study abroad can cause disruptions) and required seminar or practicum courses (which often cannot be substituted with study abroad courses). Note also that the GE "designations" WI, G, DI cannot be completed through a study abroad program (with the exception of CSUSB-Led programs).

  • Make a List of Remaining Requirements
Your degree requirements are tracked in PAWS. Making your own list of remaining requirements can be helpful when comparing the coursework you need to the courses available at the study abroad programs you are interested in.

  • Find Programs That Offer Coursework in Your Field
You can search programs by academic field to identify the ones that have the most coursework in your discipline. Use the "Area of Study" filter in the "Advanced Search." Alternatively, if you begin planning early, you can select the program that you want to attend and review the available courses, then map these onto your remaining course requirements and save them for when you study abroad. Many students "save" upper-division GE requirements to complete abroad.

  • Use the Credit Transfer Agreement Form to Help You Plan
When you apply for or are accepted into your study abroad program, you will complete the "Credit Transfer Agreement Form" to document your academic plan. The form is circulated for signature by the Education Abroad Office and then filed with the Office of the Registrar. This provides you with a guarantee of which degree credits you will earn while you are abroad (as long as your course enrollment matches what you report on the form).
