CFP Signature Study Abroad Programs

Call For Proposals: Signature Study Abroad Programs

The College of Extended and Global Education (CEGE) is utilizing strategic funds to support the development of between 4 and 10 “signature” study abroad programs. Signature programs should:

  • Offer degree-seeking CSUSB students the opportunity to earn credit (programs that align with GE requirements will be reviewed favorably)
  • Be developed in a manner that is not specific to or dependent on the faculty members involved
  • Offer a price point and location that is attractive to students
Each "signature programs" will be developed by a group of 2 to 5 faculty members (preferably 3) and will involve either:
  • Multiple faculty agreeing to share the responsibility of teaching the same course in different locations
  • Multiple faculty agreeing to share the responsibility of teaching different courses in the same location
  • Multiple faculty agreeing to share the responsibility of teaching the same course in the same location
The collaborators working together on a proposal may be in the same department, or different departments; the same college, or different colleges. Multidisciplinary and inter-college collaborations will be reviewed favorably.

All collaborators must be willing and qualified to teach as a part of the program. Collaborators must be willing to collectively lead the program at least three times, and at least one time each, in a five-year period (2026-2030). Multiple collaborators traveling with the program each time it is offered is encouraged. If only one collaborator has location-specific experience, a plan for the other collaborators to gain on-site experience before leading the program alone must be provided in order to comply with EO-1081.

The timeline is as follows:
  • September 2024: Call for signature program proposals
  • November 2024: Information session during International Education Week
  • February 1st 2025: Signature program proposals due
  • March 2025: Proposals evaluated and selected
  • April-August 2025: Mentorship provided to develop program
  • September 10th 2025: CSUSB-led program proposal due
  • October 2025: CSUSB-led program proposal evaluation
  • Summer 2026: Signature program inaugural run (Spring Break 2026 will also be considered)
Signature program proposals will be evaluated and selected by the Council on International Affairs' Subcommittee on Education Abroad. Four to ten proposals will be selected to fund (up to $20,000, $1000 per faculty member).

Each collaborator will receive up to $2,000 as a stipend or Professional Development Funding. The first $1,000 will be awarded for an approved signature program proposal. To receive these funds, collaborators sign an agreement confirming their commitment to teach as part of the program. If for some reason the faculty who develop the CEGE signature study abroad program cannot teach the course, the dean of academic college(s) in consultation with dean of CEGE may invite others to teach the course (including the support of the study abroad component). The second $1,000 will be awarded to each collaborator after they successfully teach as a part of the program they designed. This must be completed by winter intersession of the 2030/2031 academic year. If a program is offered but does not run when a faculty member is scheduled to teach it (i.e., it does not meet minimum enrollment for financial viability, or is cancelled for other reasons), the program leader will not be entitled to the second $1,000 payment.

The $2,000 per collaborator is compensation for work above and beyond the commitments associated with traditionally developed faculty-led programs. All tenured and tenure-track faculty and any full-time staff members with a terminal degree in their field (eligible to serve as the instructor of record for the course they will teach) are eligible to participate.
