About Aix-Marseille Université

One of the largest French-speaking universities in the world, Aix-Marseille Université (AMU) is a hub of teaching and cultural exchange in the South of France. AMU has partnerships with universities all over the world, welcoming 10,000 international students each year to learn French and study full-time. This program is administered by a Resident Director (who is a CSU faculty member) and full-time local staff. Students attend Service Universitaire Français Langue Etrangèr (SUFLE) at Aix-Marseille Université.

The France: Language and Culture program provides students with the opportunity to maximize their knowledge of the French language by participating in special instructional programs for non-native speakers. The program begins with a three-week intensive Preparatory Language Program (PLP) in the late summer. During the PLP, general language skills are reviewed and developed during morning sessions, with the emphasis being placed on speaking skills. Afternoon workshops are offered on culture, history, and politics. Classes and workshops are designed to help students adjust to living and studying in France.

During the fall and spring semesters, students take courses arranged by SUFLE and concentrate their studies on French language. Depending on the results of a language placement exam, students may have a variety of electives to choose from in subjects such as literature, art, music, cinema, history, and politics. CSU students do not typically take courses in the regular university departments, although students with sufficient French language skills may qualify to do so. For graduate-level credit, students must enroll in regular university department courses.
