Program Models

CSUSB-led study abroad programs require that enrolled students complete one more more course in association with their participation. Course instruction must stretch over at least five weeks.

CSUSB-led study abroad programs typically align with one of the following models:

  • Summer Study Abroad | Course listed and taught, and international travel takes place, during one 5-week summer term or the 10-week summer term. Travel is typically one to five weeks in length. Proposals must be submitted for review by September 1st (approximately nine to eleven months before travel).

  • Winter Intersession Study Abroad | Course listed and taught, and international travel takes place, during the winter term. Travel is typically one to three weeks in length. Proposals must be submitted for review by February 1st (approximately ten to evelen months before travel).

  • Spring Break Study Abroad | International travel takes place during Spring Break in association with a course that is listed and taught in the Spring Semester. Travel is typically seven to ten days in length. Proposals must be submitted by May 1st (approximately eleven months before travel).

  • Spring Semester Study Abroad Add-On | Travel takes place in summer in association with a course listed the preceding Spring Semester. Travel is typically one to five weeks in length. Proposals must be submitted by May 1st (approximately nine months before course instruction begins).

  • Fall Semester Study Abroad Add-On | Travel takes place during the winter break in association with a course listed the preceding Fall Semester. Travel is typically one to three weeks in length. Proposals must be submitted by February 1st (approximately seven months before course instruction begins).

Minimum course enrollment for study abroad programs is determined by a combination of program budget and requirements set by the Dean of the academic college in which the course will be offered. Typically this number is between 11 and 14 students.
